1989 Upper Deck #1 is the Griffey rookie most collectors picture first. Topps Traded #41T, Bowman #220, and Fleer #548 are other major 1989 rookies, each with its own design and card number.
His 1987 Bellingham card comes from the minor leagues. And a Topps Traded Tiffany #41T is a different version from ordinary Topps Traded, even though the number matches.
The cards to know
| Year | Set | Number | Type | Collector note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1989 | Upper Deck | #1 | MLB RC | The familiar portrait and Star Rookie design. |
| 1989 | Donruss | #33 | MLB RC | Rated Rookie base card; separate from later reprints. |
| 1989 | Score Traded | #100T | MLB RC | Traded-set rookie with a post-swing photograph. |
| 1989 | Topps Traded | #41T | MLB RC | Regular version; keep Tiffany separate. |
| 1989 | Bowman | #220 | MLB RC | Separate from Bowman Tiffany. |
| 1989 | Fleer | #548 | MLB RC | Regular issue; Fleer Glossy is a different version. |
| 1989 | Topps Traded Tiffany | #41T | Premium RC version | Same number as regular Topps Traded. |
| 1987 | Bellingham Mariners team issue | #15 | Minor-league / pre-rookie | Earlier than his 1989 MLB rookie cards. |
Upper Deck #1 is the starting point

The smiling portrait, blue Mariners cap, and Star Rookie banner make this one easy to recognize. It is the card I would use as the reference point before looking at his other 1989 releases.
Do look at the back. Some copies have a factory wrinkle there, even when the front looks clean. That is a condition issue, not a special rookie variation. A clean front does not rule out damage on the back.
Topps, Bowman, and Fleer also count
For Topps, the number is 41T and the set is Topps Traded. Dropping “Traded” from a search makes it harder to tell what you are seeing. Bowman #220 and Fleer #548 have their own designs and card numbers. All three count as Griffey rookies.
The complete 1989 base-rookie group also includes Donruss #33 and Score Traded #100T alongside Upper Deck, Bowman, Topps Traded, and Fleer. These are separate releases rather than parallels of one card.
The earlier Bellingham card
The 1987 Bellingham Mariners team issue #15 is a minor-league card. It is earlier than the 1989 rookies, but “earlier” and “main MLB rookie” are different collecting questions. Use the full release name and number when comparing it with a listing.
If your collection follows Griffey from the minors to Seattle, that earlier card has a clear place. If you simply want one MLB rookie, you do not need to buy a minor-league card first. Be especially careful with listings that use “pre-rookie” without naming the team issue.
Tiffany and Glossy are not ordinary base cards

The pictured #41T is the regular Topps Traded base card. Tiffany uses the same design and number but has a glossy finish and white card stock, so the two versions need separate searches and comparisons.
The same care applies to Bowman versus Bowman Tiffany #220 and Fleer versus Fleer Glossy #548. Those premium versions were sold in factory sets. Do not assume a card is Tiffany or Glossy because it catches the light in a photograph; confirm the version before paying extra.
The Rookie Card Take
I’d start with Upper Deck #1 if I wanted the most recognizable Griffey rookie. But if I liked the Topps photograph more, I’d be happy with regular Topps Traded #41T. I would not feel obliged to pay for Tiffany simply to own that design.
For a smaller budget, compare ordinary copies of Topps Traded, Bowman, and Fleer in similar condition. Pick the card you enjoy looking at. A lower grade or an ungraded copy can still fill the same spot in a collection; just make sure you understand its condition.
